Single use Bioreactors

Single Use Bioreactors for real measurement and control

Single-Use bioreactors are increasingly favored for the economic advantages they offer. Many mammalian cell based biotech producers are moving to disposable modules, pre-sterilized and qualified according to regulatory requirements. Benefits of single-use bioreactors include faster facility set-up, reduction of down time, simplified validation, and more efficient use of plant floor space. Disposable bioreactors greatly reduce the risk of cross contamination in multi product facilities.

Applikon offers a selection of single-use bioreactors in two basic formats:

Flexible bag bioreactors
Rigid stirred tank bioreactors

Both bioreactor designs offer measurement and control of important process parameters.

The Appliflex flexible bag systems support both classical electrochemical sensor technology and optical sensors for pH and dissolved oxygen. Appliflex bioreactors are supplied in 10 liter, 20 liter and 50 liter total volume.

The CellReady bioreactor is a disposable version of the Applikon 3 liter glass autoclavable bioreactor and can be used as a direct replacement of these systems.

For both systems the standard controller is the Applikon ez-Control.

Steam in Place Bioreactors

The concept of modularity (using standard modules to customize the lay out of the bioreactor) has been extended to the stainless steel pilot plant bioreactors and fermentors. The vessels are cGMP and comply with different pressure codes throughout the world. The systems are fully documented and delivered with all necessary documentation to support easy validation.

The Biobench systems are available from 7 Liters - 20 Liters Total Volume

The Pilot Systems are divided in two types ranging in sizes of 20 to 140 liters.

Sensors

Our own pH and DO (pO₂) sensors. The pO₂ sensors with special patented titanium module guarantees low drift in measurement and control.
Special retractable sensor holders - Trackfix - Sensors can be removed even from a running bioreactor. Can be used with both the pH sensor and the DO sensor.

The Unique Perfusion Special – Ultrasonic Cell Separation system – BioSep

The Applikon BioSep system is a unique, cell retention device for high-density perfusion processes. Using high frequency resonant ultrasonic waves to separate cells instead of a physical mesh or membrane, it offers all the benefits of traditional devices but without their inherent problems and limitations.

The BioSep, based on the technology of acoustic resonance, is a non fouling / non clogging retention system. It can be applied in continuous mode which makes the BioSep the most favourable instrument for perfusion cultures. The BioSep can be applied in both R&D (max. 1L/day), process development and on production scale (1000L/day). Screening of cells and medium optimisation typically are applications in the R&D segment. Furthermore the BioSep can be seen as the first step in the DownStream Processing. The economic advantages are evident and described in literature.The technology of the BioSep also is very attractive for applications such as concentration of cell / particles and washing (e.g. beads).
